Surf, Sand, & Sunsets!

Upstay's Guide To

Known for its four-mile stretch of pristine shoreline and impressive surf, Jaco is the closest major beach town to the capital city of San Juan.

Beaches
Jaco Beach

The beach is fringed with palm trees, with warm rolling waves that attract surfers from all over Costa Rica. The perfect spot for a sunset stroll.

Hermosa

Known for its world class surfing, this beach gets lots of wind and giant waves. Hermosa beach is widely regarded as the best surfing beach in Costa Rica and all the international competitions are held there.

Esterillos

Playa Esterillos Oeste beach has dark sand and dark blue waters with constant waves. It's not that nice for swimming but ideal for surfing.

Tortuga Island
There aren't many white sand beaches or snorkeling spots in the Jaco area so if that's what you're looking for, then you have to go to Tortuga Island.
Herradura Beach

Fishermen can fulfill their dream of catching a marlin, roosterfish, sailfish or tuna. Herradura is one of the best places to go deep sea fishing in Costa Rica.

Adventure
Nauyaca Waterfalls

Because of the lush mountains outside Jaco, there are many waterfalls. These impressive waterfalls require a 4 kilometer (2.5 mile) hike in the jungle but it is worth every step to see with your own eyes!

Miro Mountain Hike

For the best view of Jaco, hike up to Miro Mountain right outside town. It's an abandoned building that has been tastefully decorated by local graffiti artists and it's a fun hangout spot (and you'll work up a good sweat to get there).

Fishing
Los Suenos Fishing Charters provides deep sea and inshore fishing, from Los Suenos Resort Marina.
ATV Jungle Tours

There are a number of ATV tour companies in Jaco that you can explore the jungle with.

Monteverde Cloud Forest

Besides incredible endemic flora, it's also home to animals such as howler monkeys, hummingbirds, tree frogs, and two-toed sloths. Soak in all the beauty around you on a high-flying zip line tour.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Explore the park with a professional naturalist guide as they point out monkeys, sloths, iguanas, Morpho butterflies, and more.
